The series Pirates of the Caribbean was inspired by a Disney theme park ride, and in 2006, when the ride was revamped, the character of Jack Sparrow was introduced to it. He was brought to life by the actor Johnny Depp, who based his characterization on The Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and cartoon character Pepe Le Pew. Jack Sparrow was conceived by Elliott and Rossio initially as a supporting character, but Jack serves as a central protagonist in the films. He appears in the sequels Dead Man's Chest (2006), At World's End (2007), and On Stranger Tides (2011).

The climactic sea battle was shot in an air hanger at Palmdale, California, where the cast had to wear wetsuits underneath their costumes on angle-tipped ships. The monochromatic style was used to represent its antithesis from the usual colorful pirate environment. The scenes in Davy Jones' locker were shot in Utah. The animal trainers taught the monkey to sit with her arms crossed on the plate. The effects guys made a small wooden barrel with a vibrating plate on top.

(at around 23 mins) The scene in which Jack the Monkey is shivering, was accomplished by the concerted efforts of the special effects and animal training departments. It is caused by the refraction of light in the atmosphere, amplified by a mirage. The green flash is a real, but very rare, optical phenomenon during sunrise or sunset, that is best observed at sea. That's more than the budget of all three Lord of the Rings films combined. The most expensive film ever made (at the time), not adjusted for inflation.
